Factions

Information on all factions within the setting, be it major or minor ones.

While including all of them, the more important ones will appear at the top and minor ones at the bottom.

"The Empire"

The first and most prosperous human government to ever fare in the space. Not much is known about its past and its legacy has been long lost or forgotten under mysterious circumstances. Just like its history, its true name is either lost, or has been deliberately hidden by those in the position of power of both TerraGov and SolGov.

It is said that most of the government representatives and military forces disappeared during fourth expansion era.

Rumors say that remnants of the Empire still wander the further reaches of human space, unknowing of what has happened to high command, believing the current situation to be an insurrection, which has to be stopped.

Whatever is the case, the Terran Government and Sol Central Government claim to be their direct successors, leading to the current state of "civil cold war".

Terran Government

The industrial and military might of human sector of the space.

They are known for inheriting and warping the ideals of the Empire during its early days, which include focusing on the prosperity of Humanity and distrustful approach to alien species and their technology.

Sol Central Government

The scientific and economic powerhouse within the human part of space.

They inherited the rapid space exploration tactics and focus on experimental technology from the Empire's third expansion era.

Independent Space Confederation

A broad term for most independent human colonies/governments that are not a part of either SolGov or TerraGov that decided to unite their efforts in keeping their independence secure.

While they act as one in external politics, the same cannot be said about the way each separate colony/government operates. Each member of the confederation has a great share of freedom in their internal politics, and as such, members of ISC vary anywhere from liberal democracies to military dictatorships.

Although being kicked out of the confederation is very rare in this age, such a possiblity is keeping most authoritarian members in check simply out of fear of being defenseless against other groups, if such an event happens.

As conflicts with those outside of ISC become more frequent, however, such actions become a threat to the confederation as a whole, so there hasn't been a single government or colony that left or was forced to leave ISC in a long time.

Independent Worlds

While it is not a faction, it is worth mentioning nonetheless.

In the age of silent conflict between TerraGov and SolGov, most of the previously independent colonies either joined the bigger factions, were forced to join or outright conquered. Those that somehow kept their true independence, even from the Confederation, usually belong in one of the 2 categories:

  • Colonies with very high economic importance. Worlds in this category managed to remain neutral due to economic benefits that come from staying out of conflict. Some of them interact or trade with both TerraGov and SolGov, while the others act as merely autonomous colonies of another government. Regardless of what they are, both the independent colony and their "benefactors" would lose too much if that status were to ever change.
  • Distant worlds. Those are usually leftovers from the Empire's second expansion era, planets that were chosen due to their natural resources or scientific importance and were based further away from Solar System. While they are too of high importance, as the ones from previous category, they are not in danger of being conquered simply due to logistics of sending a fleet that far away. Although being out of sight of two major human governments, they are not by any means safe, as distant sectors of space present them with threats much more vile and atrocious than what Sol and Terra could ever be.

Entities

Things that could not classify as factions, i.e. hives of monsters, animals and other creatures.

Abominable Infestation

Bio-engineered, constantly evolving species of "insects". Although insect-like in some behavioral patterns and sometimes in appearance, the larvae are "asssembled" out of remains of other organic creatures. After growth period has passed, larva grows into an egg that after some time turns into a new caste within the hive. This process(evolution or metamorphosis) isn't exclusive to larvae, as all castes constantly repeat it to grow into more complex creatures seemingly with no limit, although growth and incubation period grows with each such evolution, which could eventually result in hybernation time up to hundreds of years, leaving the egg very vulnerable to attacks. The process can be done voluntarily by each caste, aside from larvae, and as such, they will avoid doing so while in the middle of combat or otherwise in danger.

Origins

The infestation initially began on one of the planets within independent worlds, far away from Sol system. From that point they rapidly spread all across the sector until their territory was simply enormous(~10 times more systems than SolGov currently controls). After that, they chose a different strategy, and launched large amount of "infestation nodes" into all directions to begin new colonies deep in the territory of unsuspecting governments and colonists.

Each infestation node is essentially an asteroid made out of flesh, compressed many times to survive the impact on the planet, which contains up to a hundred of larvae, which venture outside after making contact with habitable planet. Though they are quite vulnerable during first few days, given enough time, they will spread out and consume entire planet and even the system, if left unmanaged.

Nobody really knows of who or what created the very first abominations of their kind. Many speculate that it could've been an experiment gone wrong, while the others suspect it to be a deliberate use of bio-weaponry.

  • Terran consensus on this matter is that unknown alien civilization launched it to destabilize the human space, saying how the abominations launch their nodes only towards human space. This is, however, not true, as many alien worlds fell just like the human ones.
  • Opinions on SolGov territory vary. Some, taking a more scientific and theoretic approach, consider the possibility of it being a natural evolution process from already existing species on one of the independent worlds. Although government officials did not come up with a unified response, many within it put the blame on independent worlds for "performing dangerous biological experiments that went out of control".
  • Most of the still independent worlds outside of ISC are bordering the sector of infestation, and have to deal with the most vicious of attacks almost every month, and they have gotten quite experienced in the art of exterminating the abominations. Due to having to defend themselves, many dedicated their time to that, instead of debating on their origins.
